I am so grateful to be back safely after a long break! Normally I use this time to sort out stuff in my head and my life but this time was different.
We spent ten lovely days at the seaside with some of the children and grandchildren and it was good just to sit on the patio of our holiday home and watch the moods of the ocean. Although we had rain almost every day for most of the day we had beautiful late afternoons with the kids exploring the tidal pools and the big boys men entertaining themselves with action kites or throwing rocks or whatever…
Gauteng was busy as ever when we returned and we took a day to stock up on fresh provisions and do the washing and then left for the Drakensberg. The first two days were spent cleaning and preparing for Christmas and the family joining us. After that… nothing much happened, except for relaxing, bonding and allowing my soul to catch up with my body after a hectic year. Fog shrouded the mountains and the temperature dropped to 11 degrees on Christmas so we spent the day in front of the fireplace.
It is usually during this stage that I get to the point of sorting out stuff introspection. What did happen was that I realised more and more every day that I have a lot to be grateful for. Listening to Frans and the boys joking around the fire on the deck outside while we were relaxing in front of the fireplace brought a feeling of contentment and deep gratitude. For the first time in five years we were ALL together at the cabin in the Drakensberg!
Subsequently I have only one New Year’s resolution and that is to work on my gratitude – to realise and acknowledge the Grace that my family and I experience every day of our lives.
That fits in perfectly with our first layout of the year, aptly titled ‘A few of my favorite things’. The Lost and Found collection from My Mind’s Eye is beautiful with hanging bird cages and a birdie OUTSIDE of the cage. To me this symbolises the breaking free of my desire for what I do not have. I used a chipboard birdcage with a cat perched on top, but again the bird has escaped and watches the cat from above.
I just could not resist using pieces of the cardboard backing from the ribbon as embellishment on the layout.
Once I sat down and started a list of my favorite things I could not stop! So how do you measure the things you love?
I do not know the answer to that question but I intend being grateful without measure for the things I have and love.
Happy scrapping till next week!
